Checksums

A checksum is a hash (or part of a hash) of a computer file or character string that is used to check if the file is the same as another file or character string. A lot of websites on the internet now offer the MD5 or SHA-1 checksum/hash results of files they allow users to download from their websites. This allows the user to create a checksum/hash of the downloaded file and compare it to the checksum/hash published on the website. If the checksums/hashes are the same, then this means that the downloaded file is the same and is not a corrupted version. We regard MD5 and SHA-1 hashes as inadequate and only recommend SHA256 or SHA512 checksums or hashes.

The program we recommend our website visitors use to generate the checksums/hashes is ‘QuickHash-Windows-v2.6.9.2’ from https://quickhash-gui.org/download/quickhash-v2-6-9-2-for-windows/. Try to only use this specific version (Windows-v2.6.9.2) and if you can’t find it from this website, do an online search-engine search to download it from another site. Make sure you check the checksum of the file at the time of first download, and again prior to first use (see next paragraph). To use this program simply load the program, click the ‘File’ tab, select the ‘Hash Algorithm’ you want to use, and then copy and paste the checksum value published on the website where the file was downloaded from into the text box which says ‘Expected Hash Value (paste from other utility)’. After you’ve done this, click ‘Select File’, then find the ‘File you want to check’ and click ‘Open’. The hash value (or checksum) will be revealed in the centre box and if it matches the hash value (or checksum) you copied and pasted from the internet, a message box will appear saying ‘Expected hash matches the computed file hash, OK’. If it doesn’t match it will say ‘Expected hash DOES NOT match the computed file hash!’.

To check the checksum of the ‘QuickHash-Windows-v2.6.9.2’ program itself; in your regular computer operating system, do an online search for ‘online sha256 hash generator’ and select the first two websites that allow you to upload the ‘QuickHash-Windows-v2.6.9.2’ program. Then upload the program to both websites to check the SHA256 checksum. They need to match the checksums published on this webpage.

Here are the MD5, SHA-1, SHA256 and SHA512 hashes of all the specific computer programs we list on our website immediately after they have been downloaded from the internet. They are listed in alphabetical order. All these programs play an important role in securing your data and cannot not be substituted with a different program or program version. Especially important programs are electrum-2.7.12-portable.exe, FoxitAdvancedPDFEditor31_enu_Setup.exe, truecrypt-7.1a-linux-x64.tar and truecrypt-7.1a-linux-x86.tar. Never substitute these with any other programs.

The only exception to this no substituting rule is with regards to using the electrum program on the online, internet connected computer and operating system. In the case of using the electrum program on the ONLINE computer, you should always use the newest version of electrum.

Different versions NOT OK to use - substitutes not allowed– should use specific program and version number
